Sew Mama Sew Winner and Grandchildren Pix

MayGiveawayDay

Well, I did the drawing this morning and our winner is Zees5. I don’t know who she is as she is not a blogger, but anyone is allowed to enter if they can leave a comment. fabric giveaway 011-3000

She is an avid FOLLOWER of quite a few blogs. :o)  I’ve sent an email off to notify her. If I don’t hear back in a few days, I’ll send the gift to the next winner in line.

I use Random. org and actually type in the numbers because the list randomizer is MORE truly random than an algorithm  drawing. It’s a little more trouble but more fair in my mind. :o) How I wish I could give away more gifts! I do love sending goodies your way. :o)

Cake, pinwheel, Augy and Lena 048-2000

I do hope you are all having a great week. I look forward to next week when I’ll be back to a regular posting schedule.

Cake, pinwheel, Augy and Lena 039-2000And we’ll have lots of fun things to do… a great new trick to overcoming procrastination, sewing tutorials, lovely glass jewelry, and I’ve got a new dessert to share with you.

WIP’s Graduation Photos, New Throw Pillow Covers, Antique Quilt, A ‘Bomb’ Cake, Dinner for 40, and a Pantry Re-Do

DSC06473-3000
Is this face destined for greatness??

Time will tell! LoL!  Can you guess what Jacob wants to be when he grows up?  Hmm…Green Beret…policeman..secret service…lawyer…preacher?

These are photos that will be in Jacob’s senior collage which I ordered on line today. And I've just finished his diploma. It's ready to print on nice paper and sign. (It wasn't the actual diploma..but just a template. A reader pointed out that I had mispelled the word principal..as principal. Those typos do get me when I'm in a hurry. LoL!)   The graduation party festivities and planning are in full swing!

Getting the house ready…is part of what I’m busy with today…   I was really on a roll with the re-covering of my couch cushions. I’m trying to make them match this antique quilt of Tim’s grandmother’s. She gave it to us as a wedding gift and I think it will be perfect for the living room and our style of decor.

It’s been waiting for the right time…since Christmas. With 40 guests coming, I decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and go ahead and repair the quilt. It’s not as hard as I thought it would be though finding the fabric was a chore. I’ll be sharing a tutorial next week. :o)

Week 5 034-3000

I’m also having a real fun time designing a ‘Yellow-cake Uranium Bomb Cake’ per request of my weapon crazy son. No..I didn’t have a pan in the shape of a bomb…or did I?

 Week 5 009-3000

Ah! What about the deep dish oval Corning-ware casserole…and the lid! It worked perfectly. Now…for the army green icing.
  Week 5 032-3000

We’re using red and black twizzlers to stick in the middle where we will cut out a slice of cake to reveal the cut wires inside of the bomb. We wouldn’t want anyone to think it was about to ‘go off’. LoL!

Week 5 014-3000 Week 5 025-3000
photos by Christian..

I took several photos of our Sago Palms which we trimmed to the stubs a couple of weeks ago. They are growing beautifully as are the magnolia blossoms.  Christian took fabulous photos of them! I’ll be doing that post tomorrow.

Week 5 038-3000

And I sure had to do some cleaning. I’m still washing dishes by hand…but the control panel has been ordered. In the meanwhile, I wash the dishes and load them in the drainer to air dry. It’s been working fine for four weeks now!

Week 5 048-3000

The fridge is sparkling and the pantry is finally re-organized. Rebekah and I have been wanting to do this forever and were really inspired at the IKEA pantry demo. But no way were we going to pay for their ‘units’. Ha!  Good ole’ Wal-mart to the rescue!

Week 5 002-3000

At the moment though..I’m just cooking..and cooking and cooking!! Three giant pots of potatoes for potato salad (I used two crockpots) and three giant briskets which I managed to SQUEEEeeeeze in to the oven by cutting one in half and putting it into two smaller pans.

Oh yeah…and I had to cook supper too. Can’t let the troops starve can I?

I haven't forgotten you! :o)   I was able to visit the first couple of days this week..but I may not be able to drop by until the dust settles for returning comments. However, be assured that I so appreciate your comments and read everyone…usually when I can’t stand up any more. Ha!

Have a great week! What are your works in progress? It’s always fun to see what everyone is up to, I think. :o)

An Easy Dish Towel Tote Bag for Mother’s Day

It’s the week before Jacob’s graduation as you know, and I found I just didn’t have time to do my ‘super’ newsletter. So I’ll be posting when I can this week. It’s probably for the best since I’ve done quite a few easy sewing projects this week in an effort to get the house ready for the party. :o) I’d hate to have to cut the instructions or photos short.

Today’s project is super fast and so easy that you or your kids could do it in a jiffy.  I thought it was a great gift idea, just in time for Mother’s day! I didn’t plan this…it just popped in my head. :o)

secret sister gift

Recently, I was given the most enchanting secret sister gift…darling spatulas, cookie cutters and heavy cotton dish towels all in a matching bag. The colors were just fabulous! So bright and springy.

Sadly, the dish towels don’t match my kitchen..which is decorated in Americana blue and white. The neon green was just a wee bit too bright.  But I was just entranced by the festive colors and happy floral designs and had to do ‘something’ with this lovely fabric.

It just happens I’d been wanting a ‘spring’ tote bag to take with me on errands and to church. Wow—how did she know this was the perfect fabric for my purposes?

I know there are ‘neater’ ways to do this project, but it was late at night after a long day of sewing covers for the patio furniture and I was too tired to come up with something ‘ideal’.  Using a Serger really made this project a snap! I bet I spent a whole 20 minutes on the project.

dishcloths

What do you need? Just two sturdy cotton dishtowels, thread and 2 yards of 1 to 1 1/2” wide grosgrain ribbon.

1 sew right sides together 2 dishcloths sewn end to end 3 turn dishcloths right side out 4 pin straps of ribbon in place 5 stitch to reinforce handle

Here are the steps:
  1. Sew the two dishtowels right sides together across the short ends. Turn right side out. Now you have a ‘lined’ rectangle though the sides are still open. You could baste the side edges closed to make things easier.
  2. Cut two lengths of ribbon of about 31” each or whatever fits comfortably for the receiver. A child’s bag could be shorter.
  3. Fold under one inch on each end and place the ribbons on the outside of one end of the rectangle and pin in place as shown. Do the same for the other end. (The short ends are the openings of the bag when sewn together.)
  4. Stitch squares and x’s at the bottom of each ribbon and again near the bags’ edge for reinforcement.

  1. Fold the rectangle (with the handles tucked inside) right sides together. Stitch the side seams closed. Cut off the thick excess. (can be saved for making the bow) Finish the edge with zig-zag stitching if you like.
  2. Optional: For a semi-flat bottom, open the bag out on each side so that about one inch of fabric is laying to the right and left of the seams. This will make a point where the sides seams meet the bottom of the bag.
  3. Pinch this ‘point’ and stitch across the horizontal fold. You can tack the point to the inside of the bag for extra strength in the bottom of the bag, or just cut off the point and edge finish the seam with zig-zag stitching.

12 turn right side out add bow

Now turn the bag right side out and fill it with goodies for Grandma..or ‘Mom’. :o) (Optional~ You can make a bow with the trimmings and sew it on the front.)

I hope you have a great week! I have so many neat projects to share this week and next!

Tea Chat No. 23 ~ Dickens & Tea, Seattle Kids, The Perfect Cookie, Ball Gown, God's Country

Tea and Dickens' Homemakers...the Perfect Combination!

Welcome to my first weekly 'tea chat'!  I'm so glad you dropped by today and hope you enjoy your visit through an entire week of adventures at our house. I'm having some English Breakfast tea in my very favorite coffee cup. It's the first piece of real 'china' that I ever owned and probably cemented my Anglophile tendencies!

I found this at Ross (an outlet store) when my kids were just babies and it's made in England! That's where I'd most love to travel someday ...It's a trip that I hope we will make after the kids are all on their own.

I love this cup because many of my favorite authors (English ones I might add) have the spines of their books on the cup. I made my tea or coffee in this delicate coffee mug, regularly, to have for my afternoon quiet time while enjoying another chapter or two of one of my favorite Dickens novels. He wrote so many! And they are all nice and long. :o) Have I ever told you that one of Dickens' favorite topics is the 'virtues of a wonderful homemaker'?

I ADORE Dicken's novels! Partly it was because he often honored and exalted the homemaker and the power of a good home and a loving woman of good character. You will find all types of homemakers in his novels. Click here to read the rest...

I must say, Miss Amy  of a Tea Girl in a Coffee World was determined to out do herself..but I just about died when I saw her birthday tea party for her little girl. It was just darling!! And Rayanne from A Lovely Thought's blue photos..were amazing..plus she shared a yummy looking recipe for Sugar Cakes. I've got to print that out and try those! Everyone's tea posts were just amazing..as usual! Thanks so much for joining! Be sure to visit ladies..It's like a free 'beautiful homes tour'. :o)

Let's have Tea!

If you would like to join my tea party, just link up your post right here. I'd love to come visit and see your tea post too!

The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

My best friend, Laurie, is the cookie queen, and just last week, she shared her ‘The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie’ recipe. Rebekah, my daughter, made them last night and they are NOT exaggerating! I’ve never tasted such a good cookie! I was really skeptical that there even was such a thing. But they proved me wrong. This photo is not of the recipe I’m going to share. They are just cookies Rebekah made recently.
The cookies she made from this recipe are not pictured but they were crunchy and chewy at the same time and were melt in your mouth heaven. If there is such a thing as the perfect texture of a cookie, than this was it.
Read the story of how Laurie found the perfect cookie recipe...and get the recipe..right here...

Update on the Kids and Grandkids in Seattle

Kids in SeattleEbeth and Lena

Several of you have asked how my son, Andrew, and wife, Elisabeth, and grandkids, Lena and Augy are doing since they moved. Well, they are doing great! They found a lovely condo not far from the coast near Andrew’s job in Seattle.    They have been visiting parks almost every night according to Elisabeth. She said, “The air just smells so fresh!”     It’s still rainy and chilly up there, but it’s so beautiful too! That’s why dear hubby, who grew up there, has had such a hard time acclimating to Texas. It’s a real ‘step down’ for him. LoL! He wants us to retire there someday, and now I’m sure we will!

Texas ~ God’s Country…

Ok, so it’s not the only country that God made..but you have to admit..It’s GORGEOUS! Rebekah and I couldn't resist taking photos as our trees began to leaf out. What a scene!

Rebekah’s Civil War Ball Gown and a Peek at Dicken’s on the Strand
Rebekah in ball dress back

It’s been a busy week here while we prepare for an upcoming graduation party. While cleaning the closets, what do you think we found, but the photo shoot of my daughter Rebekah, at age 14, in the Civil War Ball Gown that I sewed for her. It took me six months, had 17 yards of white satin, many yards of black lace, eight corsages (that we made ourselves) and tons of hand stitching!  This was such a huge sewing task. I think I counted 79 pieces in the dress.

The pattern I used was Simplicity 5724 and it’s a  Civil War / Victorian era Ball Gown/Dress Pattern for her to wear to Dicken’s on the Strand in Galveston. We pulled out the dress..washed it..pressed it, and Rebekah tried it on. Can you believe she actually fit in it?

How to Make Multiple Summaries or Jump Breaks in the Same Post..

If you are at all impressed by the amazing format..just know that itwas all due to the genius of Leoparddrengen who answered my 'blog'question though I didn't ask it, "How do you do multiple page breaks inthe same post?" I knew I wanted to do that, but had no idea how tobegin.  Well, this guy wrote up  a quick html template  toanswer someone's question (identical) to mine. My programmer hubbyanalyzed it and taught me a 'quick' lesson in html programming and howit works.  And we designed our own post template based off ofhis. You can access it hereif you can make use of it.

The photo albums came from Windows Live Writer which Maria of Color Me Happy suggested. I'm so glad she did! There's so much you can do with that program..and it's free!

Sadly, I know that some of my albums don't work. I'm still learning how to work that feature. Sadly, my big computer crashed and the darling photos of the grandkids are all on there. So Tim will have to get the photos off the hard way. It may be a couple of days before I get my photos back.  Thank goodness my computer is backed up though. Most of my stuff is safely burned on CDs.

What a week!  Hope you are not having so many kinks with your computer as I am.
Ah well..such is life. :o)
